Synopsis
In Màquina, director Joaquim Adrià Pujol turns the camera toward his own family. His father, Xavi Pujol Berlanga, and brother, Marcel Enric Pujol, cross the American West in an aging Winnebago on their way to Colorado, to pursue ibogaine-assisted addiction treatment. The vehicle’s repeated breakdowns echo the instability of a family shaped by alcoholism, codependency, and generational trauma. Shot with a single camera, the film stays close to the awkward silences, arguments, humor, and tenderness that resist a clean recovery narrative. Rather than present psychedelic-assisted treatment as a cure, Màquina examines what it takes to attempt change, and what loving someone through addiction can cost.
